Sipo
Wood type
Sipo wood is an African tropical hardwood species that is in durability class 2-3. It can be classified as moderately durable.
Sipo is also known as sipo mahogany and is often traded with the very similar species sapeli. It thus bears the name mahogany but is more consistent than African mahogany. Under normal conditions, sipo has a beautiful brownish-red colour, but under the influence of light it fades to golden brown. These beautiful colours also ensure that sipo has many applications. For instance, sipo can be found in window production, veneer, plywood, stairs, interior fittings and ship carpentry. Because the wood is moderately durable and is meant to be an alternative to mahogany and closely resembles sapeli, the price of sipo wood is relatively cheaper.
