Merbau
Wood type
Merbau is a tropical hardwood that grows mainly in Southeast Asia and Oceania.
This type of wood is in durability class 1 to 2. In terms of price, it is slightly more expensive than meranti, but it is more durable and therefore lasts longer. This also explains the wood's popularity. Merbau can be used in many applications, such as decking, parquet, window frames and much more. And that both indoors and outdoors.
It is also known as 'devil's wood' and there are two reasons for this: the red colour and the fact that merbau can bleed after contact with water. This 'bleeding' occurs because merbau's ingredients dissolve or leach out when in contact with moisture. This phenomenon disappears over time and can be counteracted or treated by applying an insulating layer.
