Massaranduba
Wood type
Massaranduba is a South American tropical hardwood that is in durability class 1.
The wood is sometimes popularly called horse meat wood. This is mainly due to its colour. In terms of properties, massaranduba wood is best compared to azobé and bankirai, but it is generally harder and therefore a sturdier alternative.
The hardness of massaranduba makes it widely used in the construction of terraces and other solid structures. A disadvantage of massaranduba, however, is that its hardness causes it to crack more easily than say ipé, padauk or afrormosia. This disadvantage is also reflected in the price of massaranduba wood and boards. It will in fact be cheaper than other types of wood from durability class 1 or 2.
