One of the most well-known tropical hardwood species, is meranti wood. The name meranti is actually a name for a collection of several Asian deciduous tree species within the Shorea genus.
Despite the fact that there are many meranti species, they do all share 2 similarities: they all come from the Malaysian and Indonesian forests and each sub-species boasts excellent properties. It used to be the most widely used wood species in the construction industry for a reason.

However, the difference between them is situated in these properties. For instance, the durability of the meranti species varies between class 2 and 4, meaning that the heartwood can be either low durable, moderately durable or durable. However, colour and density will also differentiate one species from another.
