Afrormosia
Wood type
Afrormosia wood is a tropical hardwood native to Africa, mainly from West and Central Africa.
This type of wood is sometimes called afroteak and can therefore be considered an ideal substitute for teak. This is mainly due to its excellent properties. Not only is Afrormosia extremely durable and stable, it also has the same grain, texture and colour as teak. Afrormosia has a beautiful brown colour with a slight sheen, but can stain black when it comes into contact with iron.
Another advantage of afrormosia, is that it does not contain as much oil as teak and is therefore easier to work with. This makes afrormosia an excellent wood species for making furniture, windows or doors. A disadvantage of afrormosia is its rarity. After all, afrormosia is on the CITES Appendix list and therefore needs to apply for the correct permits. The price of afrormosia is therefore slightly more expensive, but you get a high-quality product in return.
